As part of the ‘Screen Life Balance’ campaign of the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, Dr. Serge Tisseron, psychologist and psychiatrist, was invited to discuss the developmental impact of screen use on children and adolescents. In essence, following aspects were critically reflected:
- Why is it important to consider the age of the child, the type of media and the content consumed when assessing the impact of screen time?
- How can parents and educators/teachers balance screen time with interactive activities to support children's development?
- What are the positive and negative effects of digital media on young people?
- What role do video games play in the cognitive and social development of children and adolescents?
- How can critical thinking skills be developed in young people to stay safe online?
- What are the risks of excessive smartphone use by parents and how does this affect their relationship with their children?
- How can public spaces support a balanced lifestyle for children and young people?
